Bohren & Der Club Of Gore – Piano Nights (2xLP)

Twenty years after "Gore Motel" and five years after "Dolores", the idiosyncratic quartet Bohren & Der Club of Gore have released an album with the rather slippery title "Piano Nights", whose sound is only remotely reminiscent of the ideal intersection of "Midnight Radio" and "Sunset Mission" and instead fulfills the album title in an exemplary manner and full of respect for the song. In the unmistakable Bohren style!
After the 3-track interim work "Beileid" (2011), many things were conceivable, as the band had experimented with a guest singer called Mike Patton for the first time and also unironically covered Warlock's "Catch My Heart". Compared to this, "Piano Nights" actually represents something of a return to their roots, albeit on the basis of more complex arrangements and an expanded sound palette.
The four musicians, who incidentally consider "Piano Nights" to be their best album since "Black Earth", emphasize that the album title is not a satire, but a claim they have made for themselves. In addition, with every new album it is important to maintain the level of commitment that has been built up over the decades and not to fall into routine. "Horror Jazz" is definitely over, baby!
Reviews
"Once again, Bohren & Der Club Of Gore have succeeded in creating a provocative musical alternative to the restless zeitgeist, a cosmic doom-bar-jazz-ambient-comacore." (musikexpress, February 2014)
"A soundtrack to the journey to hell couldn't be more attractive!" (Jazzthing, February / March 2014)
