Free Yourself is one of those records that feels like a whole scene opening up in front of you. Experience Unlimited were still early in their journey here, but the album already has that restless, communal energy that would later make them such an important part of the D.C. go-go story. What stands out most is how alive it feels. The grooves are elastic, the percussion keeps everything in motion, and the band plays with a kind of joyous discipline that makes even the looser moments feel purposeful. It has the warmth of classic funk, but there is already a clear sense that this music is built for interaction, for response, for people moving together in the same room.

What makes Free Yourself so rewarding is that it is not just historically important, it is genuinely infectious.
