Kenny Burrell had already been recording for Blue Note for two years when he recorded "Blue Lights" at Manhattan Towers in 1958, a high-caliber horn session that resulted in two outstanding albums. The guitarist put together an impressive line-up with trumpeter Louis Smith, tenor saxophonists Junior Cook and Tina Brooks, pianists Duke Jordan and Bobby Timmons, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Art Blakey.
"Volume 1" opens with Burrell's laid-back blues "Yes Baby" before segueing into Jordan's livelier "Scotch Blues". Burrell enchants with a stunning rendition of Vernon Duke's "Autumn In New York" before closing the set with a penetrating version of the Duke Ellington staple "Caravan". The album's finishing touch was the graceful cover featuring an illustration by Andy Warhol, one of three Blue Note covers
